How to choose film-faced birch plywood edge coating

Performance requirements of edge banding coatings
Edge banding coatings must have the following basic performance indicators:
Excellent waterproofness to prevent moisture and water from penetrating into the core layer of the board
Good adhesion to ensure a stable bonding interface with the edge of the wood
High weather resistance to withstand external influences such as temperature difference, ultraviolet rays, acid, alkali and salt spray
Fast curing ability to improve production efficiency and reduce delivery cycle
Environmental performance complies with regional regulations, such as E0, E1 or CARB P2 standards
Good construction performance, suitable for brushing, rolling or spraying and other operation methods

Analysis of common edge banding coating types
Phenolic resin edge banding coatings
Phenolic edge banding coatings are one of the most widely used types in the market, especially for building formwork boards used in conjunction with phenolic coated paper. This type of coating has excellent waterproof and mildew-proof properties and is highly compatible with the coated surface. Phenolic coatings form a hard and wear-resistant paint film after drying, which is particularly suitable for high-frequency and high-humidity construction environments.
Advantages:
Strong waterproofness
Good hot pressing compatibility
Can be used in high temperature or humid environments
Disadvantages:
Long drying time
Some formulas may contain free formaldehyde
Acrylic emulsion edge sealant
Acrylic edge sealant uses water as a solvent, has excellent environmental performance, low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, and is suitable for markets with higher environmental standards. This type of coating is suitable for short-term use scenarios, such as temporary building formwork, indoor structural panels, etc.
Advantages:
Easy construction and fast drying speed
Environmentally friendly and no irritating odor
Low cost, suitable for batch coating
Disadvantages:
Water resistance is not as good as phenolic or polyurethane
Suitable for applications with lower waterproofing requirements
Polyurethane edge sealant
Polyurethane edge sealant is a high-performance industrial-grade material with extremely high wear resistance, corrosion resistance and UV resistance. It is suitable for high-intensity use environments such as heavy formwork, transport vehicle floors, dock platforms, etc. This type of coating can form a dense protective film with strong sealing properties.
Advantages:
Excellent weather resistance, suitable for harsh climate conditions
Strong adhesion, not easy to peel off
High hardness, good impact resistance
Disadvantages:
High price
Complex formula, high requirements for construction equipment and operation
Oil-based penetrating edge-sealing paint
Oil-based penetrating paint can penetrate deep into the wood fiber, enhance edge density, and form an effective barrier from the inside. Suitable for edge sealing of multi-layer boards with complex structures and uneven material density.
Advantages:
Strong penetration and lasting edge sealing effect
Wide adaptability to wood
Suitable for highly reusable building templates
Disadvantages:
Slow drying, affecting production rhythm
Pay attention to environmental emission issues

Application scenarios and selection suggestions
Different application scenarios have different performance requirements for edge-sealing paints, and the appropriate paint type should be selected according to the specific use environment.

Application Scenario Recommended edge banding coating types illustrate
Building formwork (outdoor) Phenolic edge banding coating Strong compatibility with coated paper and good waterproofness
Bridges, high humidity environments Polyurethane edge coating UV-resistant, water-resistant, and corrosion-resistant
Temporary construction formwork Acrylic edge banding Low cost, suitable for short-term turnover
Containers, truck beds Polyurethane edge coating High load-bearing capacity and strong impact resistance
Plywood for interior packaging Water-based acrylic or oil-based edge banding paint High environmental protection requirements, medium closure

Notes on edge-sealing paint selection
The selection of edge-sealing paints should not only consider performance and cost, but also combine coating process and environmental standards.
Check whether the paint provides a third-party test report (such as VOC emissions, adhesion test)
Select the appropriate paint viscosity and drying method according to the factory equipment
Pay attention to the chemical compatibility between the edge sealer and the main material and the coating to avoid coating shedding
Prioritize products that can be re-coated for easy maintenance and touch-up
Pay attention to the storage conditions and expiration date of the paint to avoid performance affected by aging
